This single malt Islay malt Scotch whisky is quite distinct from the many others of the island, given the gentle taste profile for which it is known for.
There are two reasons for this. Firstly, it has been created using lightly peated malted barley and secondly it takes advantage of the pure spring water that flows freely underground away from the peaty moorlands. The Margadale Spring itself can be found in the mountains behind the distillery buildings and the area makes an interesting walk where the views give ample reward to the adventurous.
An idyllic site was chosen close to the Margadale River in 1879. However, building of the site did not commence until two years after. Although the distillery opened in 1882, it was not until 1883 that full production commenced. After years of maturation, the whisky would begin its journey, leaving by the same seaborne means on its adventure to foreign lands.
Bunnahabhain 12 Year has changed over the years (both design and recipe!) with before it was known as a go to summer dram! Now being non- chill filtered, bottled at 46.3% and of natural color it is well for me the perfect dram.
A whisky to start your evening and with as you know what to expect but overtakes your palate with so many amazing flavors!
I have first hand seen the growth of this brand over the last six years, coming from no one knowing what it was to now a staple in everyone’s bar. It definitely is a gem and am excited to see where this distillery goes and evolves even more over the years!
